Marco Polo, the 13th century explorer, mentioned fowl with wool instead of feathers in his eastern travels. The first specimens were imported into the UK from India around 1850. They immediately won peoples affection with their unusual looks and almost constant broodiness. They are unable to fly so are easily contained. They are not particularly good layers, about 100 eggs per year, but will sit on almost any eggs and raise the hatchlings. They are one of the few breeds that have five toes, and their skin is black
