Leghorn

Large Fowl (2.5 Kg- 3.4Kg) Bantam (0.91Kg- 1.02Kg)

These birds originated in Italy, but reached England via America around 1870. They are named after a straw hat with a large floppy brim which is similar to the bird's floppy comb. They are very good egg producers and have been used to establish high yielding hybrids for commercial egg production. However they rarely go broody. Hens are best shown before they come into lay as egg production tends to reduce the colour of the legs. Both large and bantams are easy to rear and feather up very quickly with the wing feathers appearing at a day old. Females can be identified at this stage due to the longer feathers. Care must be taken of the large floppy comb in winter as it can be susceptible to frostbite.
